A ROOM WITH A SKEW

A ROOM WITH A SKEW

LOS FELIZ

STATUS: UNDER CONSTRUCTION

From the approach, the addition is congruous with the existing house. However, the ridge beam is at an angle that runs parallel to the side yard, and therefore the vaulted interior is a surprisingly dynamic volume. That volume and the bedroom itself are located at the front elevation. The stair is at the rear. One gets a hint at the roof line upon the accession of the stairs. The hallway then flattens out and the bathroom, closet, and a built-in are located in the hallway. This helps to increase the privacy of the Main Bedroom, increases the drama of finally arriving in the room with the diagonal vault, and puts the Main Bedroom in a position to get the best views in the house

Conforming, Non-Conforming adds a second-story Master Bedroom Suite to an existing two-bedroom house in Los Feliz. The end of the cul-de-sac contains a number of houses designed by the same Architect in the Spanish Revival style. The lot constraints were incredibly tight. The building design is a solution to addressing the allowable building envelope determined by the setbacks and the encroachment plane and the desire to present a street elevation sympathetic to historic style.
